It is not very often we picture a dining room with a square dining table. Normally we picture a large fancy rectangular table, perhaps with several extension leaves. The square dining table, however, can be a nice touch even when space is not an issue. Saying this, it can be both a blessing and a curse. The aesthetics may be marvelous but when it comes to being practical these are hardly as efficient.
Maybe it is just because it is so uncommon to see the once boring, plain old square shape in the context of furniture. Especially when picturing a classier dining room we tend to think of ovals and rectangles. The western mind is used to the beautiful dining area to be lavish, which means tall chairs and long tables just as much as it means solid wood and subdued colors. Whatever it is, the sudden sight of a square dining table comes across as quite pleasing to the eye. It is a break from the every day typical look that we are used to. A square dining table also comes across as quite modest. In its basic nature it is difficult if not all together impossible to sit more than four people around the square tables. Designing a square dining table that seats two people per side, for instance, would result in the table’s area being so big it would become nearly impractical (nearly, but not completely). This is where the modesty comes in. As opposed to having a table that is quite clearly designed to seat eight, ten or twelve people, this is something that sits only four. And having a table of that size means you are not bragging or boasting but are, instead, quite humble. This in itself is a fashion statement. The square dining table can also be a much more intimate in nature then its longer more traditional counterparts. The host and three guests sitting around an average household’s dining room table are kept far apart. The square dining table brings people closer together which makes it far more social and cozy. It lends itself to encouraging conversation much in the same way a couch and chairs around a coffee table do. It goes without saying how much more convenient serving and passing dishes back and forwards can be. If you are the type of person who likes to throw large, lavish dinner parties than a square dining table is definitely not the thing you would want in your dining room. If you have a secondary dining area, though, it could be a nice and welcomed change. For those that live in condos or just like the understated look, a square dining table might be just the thing you need.
