Solid Teak Dining Room Tables

Solid Teak Dining Room Tables Info and Overview

Teak is a tropical hardwood with beautiful golden to dark brown color that is perfect for gorgeous solid teak dining room tables. This excellent wood is used for tabletops with metal or wood framing. Additionally, teak could be used to make a complete table, providing sturdiness and a smooth finish. The teak tree grows rather quickly and in good soil. With the correct light, this particular tree can reach well over 100 feet tall with trunks reaching three to five feet in diameter.

Even though this tropical variety is a large and fast-growing tree, it is considered by some experts to be an endangered tree because it was used so heavily in the past 100 years. When you consider solid teak dining room tables, it is good to know that the wood is naturally oily, making it durable and moisture resistant. Yet, as experts from various tree farms around the country will tell you, teak has the unique feature of not causing rust or corrosion in contact with metal.

Some of the key benefits you get from solid teak dining room tables are the traditional look of a golden brown, wood table and the strength of this wonderful hardwood. It is interesting that teak is used quite often for outdoor furniture because of its resistance to moisture and its sturdiness. However, those who have worked with teak and other tropical hardwoods for many years will urge you to give your table some attention, even if it takes a minimum of effort.

Surface oil on teak will evaporate after a few days, but the wood’s natural oils below the surface remain, which again, give the table its sturdiness. The only maintenance that solid teak dining room tables need is cleaning. Keep in mind that if grease or wine stains become a problem, teak cleaners are available that help maintain the table’s original color. Smaller, round teak tables (four feet in diameter for example) will cost about $700, while the slightly larger six-foot round table commands a price of more than $1,300. The larger, double-extension table with oval top, while still pre-made, will run about $2,000 from most manufacturers.

For normal use, manufacturers recommend using a coaster on the table for mugs and glasses, as well as a mat or trivet for hot dishes. Spills should be wiped away immediately with a soft, moist cloth  but if there are surface watermarks, you can use water and a non-abrasive liquid soap. Most importantly, sealing the wood with an oil product may significantly darken the wood, but it would help protect against marking. Given the right location in your home and a minimum of maintenance, solid teak dining room tables should provide a lifetime of beauty and service.
