The past couple of years have been dominated by trend after trend when it comes to home decorating and modern dining tables. There is the minimalist styles of Asian furniture that are increasingly being called modern styles, then there are the steel and glass type designs that focus on taking modern materials previously unseen in the home, and integrating them into the home to create contrasts and new atmospheres and feelings in our homes.
These modern trends have been accompanied by almost contradictory styles, which are also very modern. This would include for instance the return to more traditional forms of decorating such as farmhouse styles, the huge increase in the popularity of open fireplaces, as well as wood burning stoves in the kitchen. There is also a very popular retro trend, where specific periods of the past are copied and gloried in, despite their inconveniences and strange tastes. Therefore, it is difficult when you look at all of these apparently modern styles, to think of modern dining tables as a single style or look.
Probably the most distinguishing feature of modern dining tables is that they embody a design choice. What I mean by this is that in the past, people had very little choice in the look or type of dining table that they choose. However, these days, there are so many options with dining tables that you really can go for some very different styles. Some modern dining tables will look completely different from others, depending on which trend that is being followed. A 50’s retro dining table will not look the same as a Japanese style dining table.
The most important thing therefore to remember when you are looking at modern dining tables is that you should be willing to experiment and express your design ideas in your dining tables. And not only in the dining table, but every aspect of your room can now help you to create the look and feel that you are trying to create.
