Glass Top Dining Tables

Some furniture designers and suppliers thought until quite recently, that glass top dining tables were a fad which would not last and staunchly refused to stock any glass top dining tables whatsoever. They maintained that glass was only suitable for smaller tables such as coffee tables or dinettes. They said first of all that glass was not durable enough, or heat proof enough to be a suitable top for a dining table, and that because of the east of breaking it, customers would soon shy away from it and opt for dining tables made of more traditional features.

Other designers however, had a dislike for glass top dining tables because they believed it was distasteful to be able to see everyone’s feet, and underneath the table while you ate. Today, there are very few furniture sellers who do not stock glass top dining tables and even the harshest critics have begun to design glass top dining tables to sell.

This is due to a number of factors, some practical and some to do with taste. First of all, there is no doubt that the decline in the price of glass top dining tables has had a lot to do with their growing popularity. There was a time when a glass top dining table was simply out of reach for most budgets, but they have come down a lot in price since they were first introduced.

Then there is also the fact that glass top dining tables are more durable than they may have been in the past. People trust glass top dining tables now because they are generally made of strong, thick, reinforced glass that will not crack under the heat of a dish or under a little pressure. They are also a lot less likely to chip now, which makes them much more of a practical option for most people.

As far as taste goes, first of all, people have gotten used to the idea of having a glass top dining table in their home and trust that the table will not smash or get damaged as soon as they try to use it. Designers have also become more aware of the design benefits of using a glass top dining table. For one thing, it opens a huge potential to doing more with the table base. In most cases, it is simply useless to invest in a nice table base as no one will see it; however, now that glass top dining tables are so popular, there has also been a surge in demand for highly decorated table bases.
