A great way to have an intimate family dinner is to incorporate a dining nook into the layout of your house. Most houses include a formal dining room, but families tend not to use those on a regular basis, opting instead to take their everyday meals in a corner of the kitchen. This small space serves as an unofficial dining nook, and there are many ways to make it more comfortable than even your main dining room.
The main attraction of a dining nook is that it tends to be located in the kitchen proper, though off to the side. It is ideal for family meals such as breakfast and lunch when members often get up frequently to grab something they may have forgotten from the refrigerator, or which are eaten with some haste. Nooks are generally easily accessible for the sake of a convenient meal. It is almost inevitable that the dining nook will be used at least once a day by every member of the family, and the meal most likely to incorporate the dining nook will be breakfast, that most informal meal of the day. When considering designing a nook for your own home, you may come to realize that there is already an area adjacent to your kitchen where members of the family tend to eat their morning meal. Your location is already decided, and now all you really have to do is figure out the type of furniture to make your informal room as comfortable as possible. Family members tend to take their breakfast in an area that is near to a window, and thus well-lit. A dining nook should include a table that is large enough to comfortably seat all the members of your family, and a good idea is to choose a table with sliding drawers located under the top, in order that cutlery can be conveniently stored there. There are many possibilities in terms of seating arrangements for your dining nook. One of the most comfortable options is a built-in bench- usually located just under a window on one side of the table. The bench can be padded, with throw pillows located on it for a great decorative touch. The color scheme of the padding and the wood of the bench should match with the colors of the tablecloth and the wood of the table itself. When you purchase the table for your dining nook, odds are that it will also come with a set of matching chairs. If not, look for chairs that match the wood type of the table and the bench. Again, any padding should match the color scheme of the tablecloths and bench padding you have chosen for the dining nook. Having a nice dining nook available is a great way to make your family meals have a homey, yet elaborate feel. One last suggestion for your dining nook is to consider a small handcrafted box in which to store newspapers that have been read, or possibly even setting up a small television that is visible to family members utilizing the space. |
